Artificial Intelligence shows improvement but lacks emotion

With AI systems becoming more advanced, society is feeling its negative effects.

According to the Forbes Technology Council, many jobs are being automated by these computerized robots which is already leading to significant job losses such as telemarketers, factory workers, travel agents and bank tellers. AI algorithms are only as ethical as the data they are trained on, and there are many risks of AI perpetuating biases and discrimination. Technology Journalist Mike Thomas reported that: AI is great in mathematical outputs that are linear, however, it's an algorithm looking at systematic data sets to make decisions, there is no emotional intelligence. So when users ask questions, the response may not always be the best solution. AI is limiting the ability for humans to think outside the box because AI isn’t able to do so itself. The brains are created to make complex, creative and sometimes illogical decisions. AI acts logically, but if humans give up all control, they will end up in a world that is logical in response to the input data but is also bleak and repetitive.

According to Robin Greene, an education expert, in her article on eTechnology, AI is hurting the education system. Students are now tempted by the benefits of AI, and using it to their advantage in writing classes and other academic projects. “A lot of students say they like to use AI to generate ideas for their writing, but they are missing out on learning how to come up with their own ideas. If we want students to grow up to be innovative citizens, they need to learn how to think and problem-solve without asking AI to do it,” said English teacher Jill Conrad. AI is taking away students' motivation and abilities to produce their own work and creativity. It adds more work for teachers to have to monitor this arising issue and come up with ways to avoid it. Although it provides students with easy access to information, it is limiting their work ethic. “Plagiarism is also a major issue because some students are not doing their own classwork. This adds extra stress for teachers because we have an extensive process for detecting and penalizing it. Plus, we want to give students feedback on their actual work- not what AI came up with,” said Conrad.
