Barbie movie challenges societal norms and empowers women to embrace their true selves

Just like the Barbie dolls themselves, the Barbie movie makes a strong point about women's place in society.

Greta Gerwig intended for the Barbie movie to be an idea rather than just a brand. Gerwig stated in an interview I want to make people feel somewhat relieved of the tightrope…Barbie has always been a symbol of this thing that you could never reach because she physically couldn't stand up if she were a human being. So I wanted it to almost invert that formula and find a way that it gave you permission to just be yourself and know that's enough. With Margot Robbie not only directing the film but also starring as the main doll, her purpose was well represented. “I wanted to make something anarchic and wild and funny and cathartic and the idea that it's actually being received that way, it's sort of extraordinary,” said Robbie in an interview.

The major motion picture has lifted some weight off of women’s shoulders. Women have felt represented in society.  Junior Kendall Alber said that once she saw how Barbie felt about the current society she felt extremely “sad for women, and sad for me because I realized I'm not a little girl anymore.” With Barbie encountering today's society, the young doll portrays traits as being a natural problem solver and leader. These characteristics break the common stereotypes of women being labeled as being weak or incapable, which then promotes a feeling of empowerment.  Senior Maryn Lopez said these scenes affected her the most because they “made [her] feel empowered because it's not common to see the reality of the issues women go through displayed publicly.”

Although the Barbie movie has impacted many individuals outside of the film industry, Hollywood’s directing and casting have been influenced more than anything. Robbie and her team are making an effort to allow more doors to open for women in Hollywood. With the help of her beloved team, Margot has used her own personal platform to advocate for women's rights in the film industry. Not only has the director been a vocal supporter of the #MeToo movement, but she also has worked to create a safer environment on set for cast members and crew. Overall Robbie has profited over $50 million dollars in box office sales.
