Boygenius’ heartfelt lyrics and raw emotions resonate deeply with their listeners, especially the youth. The three singer-songwriters, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, who all identify as queer, joined together in 2018 and quickly became friends. They created the band “Boygenius” after an inside joke about mocking the toxic male ego, and the way female musicians have been viewed differently throughout generations. Their first debut record, “The Record,” was released on March 31, and quickly climbed the leaderboard.

The band’s music provides a sense of comfort and understanding, addressing themes of love, loss, and self-discovery. “Boygenius is kind of an escape for me! Their lyrics are so much fun to analyze and it’s a joy when I find the intricate connections between songs. Though their songs are often sad, they bring a sense of comfort to my life,” said Junior Jayden Randall. Through their powerful storytelling, Boygenius encourages young people to embrace their vulnerabilities and navigate the complexities of life. Their music serves as a source of solace and inspiration, reminding young listeners that they are not alone in their struggles.

“Their music makes people feel things on a different level than most. The lyrics are so deep and hit you to your core. They take average everyday situations and make people feel seen by them,” said Junior Mya Goniwiecha. The band’s dedication to social activism and speaking out on important issues empowers young people to use their voices for positive change. They advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality. Boygenius uses their music to create a safe and inclusive space where LGBTQ+ individuals can feel seen and understood. According to Teen Vogue, Lucy Dacus says, that's why their shows are so special to her, they are very gay. People throw flags at them, young people are making out in front of them. It is a space that is precious to her and would have changed her life if she could have been a part of it when she was younger.

Boygenius’ influence on the young generation lies not only in their music but also in their authenticity and commitment to making a difference.
