Eagle Eye News: delivering daily news and entertainment to students

Eagle Eye News is the school’s daily newscast that brings news and entertainment to students.

It started in the 2019-2020 school year by telecom teacher Tom VanNortwick, “Many schools are doing something similar in regards to broadcasting their own news. We didn't have anything like that at the time, so we thought, ‘Why aren't we?!’” said VanNortwick. “We wanted to have a class where students could take ownership of providing our school announcements to the student body,”

The current Eagle Eye cast includes the likes of Caden Jewell, Braylon Feenstra,  Kate Wayne, Brooke Harmsen, Ibraheem Bandial, Megan Beemer, and Jacob Rylaarsdam. “Eagle Eye News is quite fun, but it can also be very stressful at times. During the homecoming season, we had at least 2 or 3 pages of announcements to record and edit, all within the hour,” said Rylaarsdam.

The process of creating Eagle Eye News is very hectic and chaotic. The cast must be ready to film at the beginning of the school day at 7:50 AM. Two cast members will anchor while the others focus on brainstorming and filming segments. Sometimes, however, the cast is unaware of who will be anchoring that day, which causes a panic and a sense of urgency. After filming the announcements, it’s up to the editor to cut out all the mistakes and make sure the announcements are presentable. Segments get filmed during the filming of the announcements, during seminars, or even while the announcements are edited. “The biggest challenge we face is having a segment ready to go for the day. Most of the time we record something 30 minutes before we put it on the episode, usually meaning more mistakes in the editing process,” said Rylaarsdam. Due to this occurrence, some episodes are not ready in time for the second hour.

Eagle Eye members are often recognized in the hallway. “Many students recognize me in the halls, usually saying ‘Hey it's the Jakery’. I personally don't like the attention of being pointed out, but it isn't the end of the world,” said Rylaarsdam. Eagle Eye cast members are akin to real-life celebrities.

“With a size of school like HHS and the number of talented, creative students Eagle Eye News is filled with all sorts of personalities and characters,” said VanNortwick.
