Although a staple of college culture in the United States, Greek life (encompassing fraternities

and sororities) needs to implement stricter rules.

While these organizations can provide a sense of community, leadership opportunities, and lifelong friendships there's a growing concern about the persistent issues such as hazing, alcohol abuse, and exclusionary practices.

Hazing remains a serious concern within Greek life. Despite numerous anti-hazing policies and laws, incidents continue to occur, sometimes with tragic outcomes. In April, a UC Davis fraternity was suspended over hazing allegations. A student in the fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi went into a panic and asthma attack during a hazing ritual. However, instead of taking him to the emergency room, he was told he was not allowed to leave. Stricter rules and more rigorous enforcements are necessary to prevent such tragedies. This could include mandatory anti-hazing education, regular audits of Greek organizations, and severe penalties for violations. From these measures, colleges can create safer environments for all students.

Secondly alcohol abuse is prevalent in many fraternities and sororities. Excessive drinking not only poses health risks but also contributes to a culture of irresponsibility and recklessness. Stricter regulations around alcohol consumption, such as limiting the amount of alcohol in Greek events and requiring sober monitors, can mitigate these risks. Additionally, regular training and responsible drinking and the consequences of alcohol abuse should be mandatory for all members. These steps would promote a healthier and more responsible Greek life culture.

Lastly, Greek organizations are often criticized for their exclusionary practices including discrimination against race, gender, and socioeconomic status. Rules that force inclusivity and diversity can help address these issues. For instance, college should require Greek organizations to have diversity and inclusion officers conduct regular diversity training and equivalent transparent recruitment processes. These measures would ensure that Greek life is accessible and welcoming to all students regardless of their background.

Stricter rules for Greek life are essential to address the persistent issues of hazing, alcohol abuse and exclusionary practices. By admitting and enforcing regulations colleges can create safer, healthier and more inclusive environments for all students involved in Greek life.
