Green Team has taken on a new activity of cleaning up the littered stands after Friday night football games. Students from school go all out in themes and show up to support the football team.
Students and parents can buy anything from hot dogs to candy, to drinks from concession stands and
other booths. This trash usually gets left spread along the stands and walkways. With the excitement of
the night, students often drop their leftovers or leave behind their trash in a hurry to greet the footballers
and friends after the game to congratulate them and take memorable in their themed outfits. With the
amount of students Hudsonville has, the student section is usually jam-packed. A student may think to
themselves: “It's just one wrapper. It's not that big of a deal.” Once they see the aftermath, they could
possibly think again. Not only is there trash from food or drinks bought prior, but there are decorations or
accessories from that night's theme sprawled throughout. “I think that the students could properly take
care of their trash, I know it is a little hazardous because they don't want to lose their seats. But I really
appreciate that the super fans help pick up the trash as well,” said Carter DeYoung (senior).
An example of this would be at a Hawaiian-themed night, there are beads, necklaces, and
Hawaiian leis left behind. For this reason, the school has volunteers from an extracurricular club that
comes clean up after the students and parents. Hudsonville Green Team sends a few members to every
game to ensure we are aware of our waste and what's left behind. “I notice that the trash left behind at
games is mostly from concessions and the candy was thrown. It is mostly the themes that have the most
people leaving trash behind,” said Carter DeYoung (senior). Our stands would remain covered in litter
and trash, game after game, without them. The Green team members are constantly attempting to do
what they can to help the environment and limit the carbon footprint. After the students leave the student
section, the Green Team stays after and cleans up all of what was left behind. After they clean up the
student section, they proceed to clean the rest of the large stands. One can imagine it can get pretty
gross. No matter the weather the green team is there cleaning. Overall the students could help by
holding onto their trash until after the game or throwing it away during the game to limit the amount of
cleanup needed at the end of the games.
