Green Team plans ahead for a future without Mother Nature

With science teacher Christine Webster’s retirement on the horizon, the future of the Green Team is being considered. Webster has been the face of the club for 14 years, but she believes the future is in good hands.

Starting with this year’s group, Webster was extremely impressed after the first few meetings. The initial meeting had 50 students show up, with half of those being new members.  Webster believes this year’s Green Team group is one of the best in years. Her excitement stems from the leadership of the juniors and seniors of the club. “We have some people that are just outstanding,” said Webster.

Green Team will also be introducing a new face this year. History teacher Andrea Morrison (formerly known as Ms. Gerritts) will be joining the team for this school year. An environmental savant, she is set to take over next school year and carry on the traditions and values as leader of the club. Mrs. Webster had only good things to say about her. “She’s getting into this with a great commitment… she’ll do great.”

Once or twice a month, the Green Team participates in various environmental-related community events. This Thanksgiving, the club will take to the track, helping out at a big race in Jamestown hoping to go zero waste. A perfect example of the group's goal, zero waste, which looks to avoid putting trash in landfills. The Green Team also meets every Tuesday to collect all of the recycling from around the school and sort the cans. It’s unique in the sense that it’s a “student-led” club, and it has an incredibly positive impact on the community.

Although Webster will no longer be around next year, Green Team is not going anywhere. Her departure does not mean the departure of the wonderful, positive environment that she has created.
