Fashion Design and Merchandising, is a new class coming to Hudsonville High School in
fall of 2025. The class allows students from ninth through twelfth grade to participate for one
trimester credit. The course will teach students multiple different aspects in designing clothing.
“The purpose of this course is to expose students to various aspects of fashion design and
merchandising.” Said Bellinger.
Bellinger has brought this class description and opportunity to the Chair/Principle to
expand the school's curriculum status. This class is a technical Education Class that allows
students to ponder on their possible future jobs. “Career and Technical Education classes allow
students to gain insight into career fields they may be interested in.” Said Bellinger, “These
courses are designed to be resume builders!”
The Fashion Design and Merchandising class will include multiple different studies, some
including ; personal style, elements and principles of design, hand stitching, and fashion shows.
The class will also be using sewing matinees as a key element to the class, to teach students
the proper way to create wardrobe. “It is important to have experience in careers that aren’t
available in college.” States Bellinger. Everything that is given to us has been made by someone
else. Fashion designing is a main focal point in our lives. “Even if you look into Target, when you
see the outfits placed on the machines someone made those, someone created that!” Said
Bellinger.
Bellinger implies that career education isn’t the only reason for this class. “It’s important
for kids here at Hudsonville High to have a creative outlet during the school day with people who
correspond with their own interests.” Said Bellinger. The class is also a safe space for students
to feel free and take a break from reality and express their creativity. In this class one doesn’t
just learn to sew, there are many different roles in fashion designing. “There is a place for
everyone in designing, there are so many different roles, like a sketch artist is very important in
fashion designing.” Said Bellinger.
“We will need to ask the community for donations for fabric to get us started.” Said
Bellinger. To start this class students and teachers can donate to help out the future class and its
students.
