A new film club has begun and is working to bring together movie enthusiasts at school. This club offers a new and unique way to watch movies by gathering together to discuss the complexities of cinema and appreciate the art of filmmaking. Started by junior Nala Itela, this club is for anyone who loves film and just wants to hang out and talk about movies with friends. “I've always had a passion for film and once I realized the lack of programs related to it at Hudsonville, I wanted to be the one to fix it. My main goal for the club is to introduce all members to different films that they wouldn't have experienced otherwise, while also creating a space of film appreciation for people who already share the interest,” said Itela.

The club meets on Tuesdays, and meets in English teacher Chris Marvin’s room. Each week, the club will select a different film to watch, with the theme being teenage movies. If the club continues on next year there will be a new specific theme. This selection ensures that members are exposed to a wide variety of genres, directors, and storytelling techniques. By watching films from different eras and cultures, students gain a broader perspective on the cinematic landscape and its evolution over time.

After each screening, the club holds discussion sessions where members can share their thoughts and insights about the film. “We're still working on what we want this to be, and some of it will depend on how many people we get, but for sure: we watch movies, eat snacks, talk about film trivia.

There is potential that we might get to: Filmmaking workshops, movie screenings, editing sessions, discussions, and potentially film field trips or competitions,” said Marvin. This exchange of ideas will not only enhance the viewing experience but also help students develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
