Post-concussion syndrome is a disorder found in only 10% of people who have experienced Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) or severe concussions. This cognitive disorder is when TBI/Concussion symptoms last longer than expected after an injury. Normal concussions resolve in around one to three weeks. For those with post-concussion syndrome, symptoms may not resolve for years. Common side effects include persistent headaches, migraines, brain fog, dizziness, emotional instability, trouble concentrating, irritability, and memory issues.

PCS is something I have personally struggled with for almost three and a half years. On December 9, 2020, I fell down an entire flight of stairs smashing the back of my head on every step. The effects of the TBI I experienced have been lingering since then. I deal with chronic daily headaches, along with brain fog, migraines, and emotional instability.

The main issue surrounding PCS is there is very little research about it. There is no “formula” to treat this disorder, unlike many other medical disorders. I have personally stumped all of the specialists I have seen because there simply isn't enough knowledge about this disorder and how to cure it. I have gone through countless types of therapies, seen a plethora of neurologists, neuro-optometrists, neuropsychologists, and the list goes on and on, along with trying over 20 different medications all while seeing no results.

Post-concussion syndrome, along with other internal disorders, are difficult because they are not apparent to others on the outside. It is something that I have gone through that nobody around me realizes because it’s hidden. Due to that, it makes it very lonely because I am experiencing debilitating pain every day that nobody can see.

Raising awareness for post-concussion syndrome and traumatic brain injuries is something I am passionate about since my life has revolved around them. I also hope my story encourages people to always be kind and gracious to those around them since nobody ever knows what somebody is going through and experiencing.

Post-concussion syndrome has no definite cure
