Science Olympiad is a club where one can improve science skills, challenge thinking, and meet new people. “Science Olympiad is a great team to be a part of, especially kids who are interested in science and engineering. It also provides an area for kids to be part of a team and also shine individually as well as you score both as a team and for individual events similar to track,” said Joshua Ernstes, one of the coaches for Science Olympiad.

A team can have up to 15 kids, and each team has to fill out 23 different science and engineering events. These events cover all aspects of science including the Earth, space, biology, physics, chemistry, and a different variety of engineering events. Each event that they compete in has 2 to 3 kids each, and they must compete to earn medals individually and points for the overall team.

Science Olympiad, like every other club at the school, is a way for students to connect with one another. This club grants students the ability to choose what events they want to participate in but also allows students to work with others, whom they most likely would not always interact with during school hours.

“Last year we were very successful. We finished 2nd at the Northridge Invitational in Middlebury, IN. We then finished 5th at the Haslett Invitational and 2nd at Allendale's Invitational. We ended up finishing 3rd at regionals and 13th in the state,” said Ernstes. Interest in the Science Olympiad has soared these last few years and that credit goes toward the hardworking and dedicated students and educators who believed in one another. Students have brought their all to make this club the best it can possibly be. Students have left a legacy in science. Science Olympiad has made it possible for students to be part of something bigger and have an identity. “As a staff, we really think it is important that all students have something they can be part of and be proud to represent our school and community and this is a great one for kids who are passionate about science,” said Ernstes. Science Olympiad is just one of the many programs at the school that can bring people together. Science Olympiad is just starting to show their potential and this club has much more to offer and give to the school and community.
