Girls track and field is a large and very team based sport. From the 17 events that can be run to the group of people that make up the team, the support system of the girls’ track and field team is extremely important.
“What I want to focus on this season is unity, team encouragement, hard work and commitment. I want them to succeed in what they do. I want to help them succeed.” said Coach Kevin Conkel. The team is made up of all grade levels. The upperclassmen show amazing leadership and patience with the lowerclassmen, according to Conkel. These upperclassmen are willing to work with the lower classmen until they reach their goal.
The coaches on the girls’ track team are dedicated teachers when it comes to their event. They have an athletic history, in track so they understand the struggles that come with the sport. Multiple coaches specialize in many different events. These coaches make sure that the athletes do not get “lost in the shuffle” or left behind
More often than not, the coaches will offer help on the weekends and the off-season for anyone who wants the help. This can help an athlete not feel so lost in the sport that they are participating in. More often than not overbreaks these coaches will offer up the opportunity to come and work on events.
Most people see track as an individual sport. They might see it like this because people can compete in their events alone and do it themselves. While that part is somewhat true, there is another side to that. While in most events an athlete runs by themselves, except for relays, how they place can help the whole team. Track meets are won by points and the only way to get points is by placing in the top three.
The team can be a place to grow and meet new people. Those people that you meet might just be new friends
